Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I last posted here. I’ve been low key having an existential life crisis/epiphany - I’m beginning to realize that all my aspirations to pursue a technical career are all socially constructed. 2018 has been one of the best years of my life. I’ve gotten the opportunity to partake in many different experiences which helped me realize that I want to work in the design/art field instead of engineering. - - Growing up, I loved to draw, design characters, and write comics/stories that make people laugh. However, I’ve always felt the subtle pressure from society and my parents to pursue medicine or engineering and get a PhD. - After 3.5 years of engineering classes, the only class I’ve actually enjoyed was 3D animation/modeling and making my own virtual reality game, Cell-fie, as a side project. Art is something I can stay up until 4 am doing, the rest of the technical classes I’ve took only drained my energy. - - Despite being on the path to graduate at the top 10% of my class, I’ve recently been reaching a lot of mental breaking points in a lot of my classes. It’s time for me to take away all the social constructs around the glorification of STEM and be honest with myself. But have no regrets because all of these classes helped me realized what I don’t want to do with my life. - - It’s a new path with a lot of unknowns, but I’m excited of what the future holds and create projects that combines my technical and creative skills.
Merry Christmas!🎄☃️🎅🏻❄️🎁☕️🎉✨
I'm excited to announce that I have accepted my offer as a Virtual Reality Robotic Surgery Game Developer Intern at Intuitive Surgical! I'm so happy to have found a job that combines my interest in surgery as well as my bioengineering, computer science/engineering, and game design background! 🎨🎮🔬✨
When I graduated high school, I thought I could overcome and be successful at anything. I’ve overcome bullying/cyberbullying. Running, academics and art were all going well. I was not prepared for the adversity that hit me during my first two years of college. - When I came into college, I had the dream of running in the Olympics and having a career as a surgeon and lifestyle blogger. However, I was faced with 6 stress fractures within the span of 2 years. - I sacrificed my mental health to seek external validation from running and grades, which were both going downhill due to my own judgment of my performance and stress. - However, I’ve always enjoyed playing games - particularly MapleStory and drawing. During my 3rd year, I started developing my virtual reality game, Cell-fie, which is my passion project that helped me realize that I want to pursue product and game design. - Through my experience in college so far, I’ve learned that by knowing what I don’t want to do played a large role in helping me realize what I want to do is what I actually want to do. - I have no regrets on not “starting earlier,” because now I know that my passion for designing digital experiences that people enjoy while making a social impact is genuine. - As a result of this realization and taking more classes relevant to my career goal, I was able to make it to the top 10% of my class, earning a spot on the Dean’s List. - Coming from a place where I thought I wasn’t good at school because I struggled with pre-med classes, I feel empowered. 😀
I recently got back from the Grace Hopper Conference! It was one of my favorite experiences of my life. I made many friends with similar interests as me. :D I've gotten interviews with several large tech and gaming companies and went party hopping at company parties every night. - - I spent my time in Houston enjoying my life, making friends, learning very important life lessons about adulthood, and making the most of the experience as a Grace Hopper Scholar instead of worrying about school - so now I can come back feeling refreshed and ready to work work work work work ☺️ - - In reality, I'm having a veeeerrrry hard time adjusting back to the school mindset and all I want to do is work on my personal projects all day (those are what helped me the most for getting interviews, give me the most happiness, and I learn much more from doing my own projects that straight up studying. (I just feel like publicly posting this with would make me feel accountable in switching my brain back to school mode lol) #ghc18
I'm excited to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration this week as a scholar! 😀 #GHC18 - On the side note, I should go on Instagram more since I have so many photos from my projects this summer that I haven’t posted here yet but life is busy. :o
